How Earth moves through space

Earth is never still. It spins on its own axis and, at the same time, travels around the Sun. The globe in this app shows the spin: watch the lit edge — the terminator — sweep across the surface as day turns to night.

01Rotation — one day

Earth turns once every ~23 hours 56 minutes, spinning from west to east. That is why the Sun appears to rise in the east. Seen from above the North Pole, the spin is counter-clockwise.

02Axial tilt — 23.4°

Earth's axis is tilted about 23.4 degrees from straight up. This tilt — not distance from the Sun — is what gives us seasons, as different hemispheres lean toward the Sun through the year. The globe here is drawn with that real tilt.

03Day & night

At any moment, sunlight reaches only the half of Earth facing the Sun. The fixed light in this scene is the Sun; as the planet rotates beneath it, every country passes through daytime and night.

04Orbit — one year

Earth also circles the Sun once every 365.25 days at roughly 30 km per second. The quarter-day left over each year is why we add a leap day every four years.
